Looks back on a relationship that ended but was nonetheless sacred and real. The speaker is not mourning what was lost so much as honouring what existed, 'I was reminiscing just the other day.' The 'what might have been' register is present in the gratitude and wistfulness: the sense that this love deserved more time.
“I left a note on the door with a joke we'd made”
The door as the surface where intimacy was once casually inscribed. A shared joke pinned to it locates the relationship in the easy, in-passing gestures the song later consecrates.
“And the story's got dust on every page”
The pages of a story that has been set aside long enough to gather dust. The image uses the physical condition of an unread text to mark elapsed time: the relationship as a book the speaker has not opened for years, the dust recording the distance between who she was inside it and who she is now. The page here is not a beginning or an ending but an archive, something that was written and has been sitting undisturbed.

The patch of ground where the love happened is consecrated, made holy by what took place on it.
“Tonight I'm gonna dance for all that we've been through, but I don't wanna dance if I'm not dancing with you”
The chorus stages two contradictory dance positions in a single line: the dance as commemoration (for everything we've been through) and the dance as refused (without you I won't). The line names dancing both as the gesture of remembrance and as the gesture that only works in the partner's presence; the absence makes the dance simultaneously necessary and impossible.
“Spinning like a girl in a brand new dress”
The new dress as uncomplicated early joy: spinning in it is the body's delight, the garment marking the bright beginning the song looks back on.
“Back when you fit in my poems like a perfect rhyme”
Looking back, the speaker measures an old relationship by how well it worked on the page. Calling the writing poems rather than songs is worth noticing, because it treats the work as something read as well as heard, and it places the person in a body of writing rather than in a room. The line concedes something too. He fit once, and the past tense leaves open whether he still does.
Measuring a person by how well they worked as material treats memory as craft. Gratitude for something finished is complicated by the admission that it was always being used.
