Podcast Analysis

Notable lyric

And all we know is touch and goWe fall in love 'til it hurts or bleedsOr fades in time…”

State of Grace is the opening track of Red (2012), written solely by Taylor and produced with Nathan Chapman. Angela & Uncle Jerry read it as a manifesto on the nature of love, with Taylor cataloguing love's qualities: it is a battlefield, spiritually transcendent, a force of nature, a surprise, a source of renewal, transformational, unsafe, painful, risky, fated, and a mosaic of broken pieces glued together. Uncle Jerry considers the first verse among the most densely packed he has analysed in Taylor's catalogue, and identifies the chorus as a form of concrete poetry where the short, three-word bursts visually enact the sudden arrival of love.
