Film

Film is the movie as an image for the speaker's own life: a relationship cast as a film whose ending she already knows, a life with a plot and a hero, and memory as a reel that keeps playing whether she wants it to or not. Above all, it is about watching. Uncle Jerry says, on the 1: "So a movie, I think for her is you know, meta narrative. She's outside of her life watching herself. She's in the audience." The image gathers across folklore, in exile, hoax, the 1 and this is me trying, and runs back to the early songs that measure a real romance against the movie version of one. It also takes in ordinary film-watching, a night at the cinema or the films a family or a couple share. It is distinct from Cinematic structure, which is a song built like a film rather than one that uses film as an image.

Film lets the speaker stand outside her own life and watch it. A movie has a plot, a hero and an ending, so casting a love as one lets her judge it by those rules: she knows how it ends because she has seen it before, she asks what the film was for if the hero dies, she mourns the greatest one that was never made. Watching is also not being able to look away. The past comes back as a flashback on the only screen in town and keeps running. Against all of these stands the movie version of love, the standard a real relationship is held to and falls short of. Wrapping up folklore, Uncle Jerry puts it simply: the films are the memories.
