Blue

Blue does two quite different jobs in Taylor's writing, and which one is in play is usually the point. There is the loving blue, a partner's blue eyes, the colour of being in love, and there is the sad blue, depression, low mood, a partner's emotional absence. Across the Lover-to-Midnights songs the colour often tracks a relationship's arc, sliding from blue-as-beauty to blue-as-grief.

In its tender sense blue marks the partner's beauty or the closeness of the relationship; in its darker sense it marks sadness, mental-health struggle, and a partner who has gone unreachable. The movement between the two is where the meaning sits: what was once cherished becomes the source of pain. In a number of songs the blue sits on the sky itself, a blue sky painted then turned to rain, the bluest skies gone the darkest grey, the blues giving way to purple-pink. Read across the catalogue, the sky's shifting colour invites a reading some listeners make explicit: the sky as a screen for the speaker's mood, its hue tracking feeling from tender to low.

You sacrificed us to the gods of your bluest days

Blue evolves across the relationship from a romantic colour (his blue eyes) to a marker of depression and sadness. In this song, the 'bluest days' represent his mental health struggles that he refused to address, which destroyed the relationship.

And did the twin flame bruise paint you blue?

Blue as both the colour of sadness/depression and the colour of a bruise, the relationship has physically and emotionally marked the partner. Uncle Jerry asks: 'Is blue the colour of sadness? Is blue also like a bruise? Like was she bruised or injured?' Angela confirms both readings.

You paint me a blue sky Then go back and turn it to rain

Blue stands for hope, safety and openness, but the sky here is painted rather than real. The partner offers the appearance of emotional security and then takes it away.

If she's got blue eyes, I will surmise that you'll probably date her

The loving blue turned cynical: the beloved's blue eyes become a type the partner keeps choosing, the colour now a sign of his pattern rather than her specialness.

And maybe you've reframed it and in your mind, you never beat my spirit black and blue

The depressive register reactivates the dead idiom, "black and blue" as the bruising metaphor consciously re-engaged so that the colours name the actual damage the song is documenting. Distinct from earlier debut-era uses of the idiom by the song's analytical foregrounding of the bruise-register itself.

We're so sad, we paint the town blue

The idiom flipped, and politically charged. "Paint the town blue" plays on "paint the town red": blue for sadness, but in a song many listeners (and Taylor's own Miss Americana documentary) read as an allegory of the 2016 election, also the blue of the Democratic party, the speaker grieving the result and the side she would go on to back. The colour holds the low mood and the political charge together.
