A moral statement through gothic imagery, to live without integrity is to be only half-alive, a ghost. The ghost here is a figure of hollowness and social death rather than supernatural haunting; the lyric uses the spectre as an image of a life unlived.
“ruin what was shiny, now it's all rusted”
The transformation from shiny to rusted as the song's central image for what the betrayal did to the friendship. The rust isn't the break itself but its visible aftermath: what the relationship looks like now that the care has stopped. Rusting as the passive consequence of damage left unaddressed - the ruination was the active event, the rust is its slow, accumulating residue.
“It was my season for battle wounds, battle scars”
The fallout of a betrayal counted in battle wounds, a period of the speaker's life marked as combat that left visible damage. The feud is told as warfare with casualties on the body.
