The four returning lines build a narrative across the song itself. At the opening the story belongs to a collective telling, something that will be recounted about both of them together. By the second pass the same phrase has named it a tragedy. By the third the speaker has reassigned authorship, shifting from "they'd tell" to "I'll tell" - a quiet claim of ownership over the account. By the fourth the story is running out of time. The song's whole argument about who holds a relationship's story is compressed into one phrase, repeated and revised until it means something else.
“Next chapter”
The phrase treats the relationship as a book being read, and it arrives at the point where the speaker no longer knows what happens next. Calling it a chapter rather than a phase assumes an author, a shape and an ending already written down, none of which she has. The figure is kept up to the last line, which closes on "The end" as a story does rather than as a couple does.

The speaker offers to disarm, framing the silence between them as a standoff she would end in a heartbeat if the other side chose love over combat. Laying down armour makes peace conditional on him speaking first.
