“You have knocked me off my feet again, got me feeling like a nothing”
Here the same off-your-feet image turns cruel: not romance but a blow that leaves her floored and worthless. The body knocked down stands in for a spirit knocked down with it.
“Drunk and grumbling on about how I can't sing”
The bridge imagines a critic, years on, still grumbling that she cannot sing. Nothing in the song argues back. The answer is the singing itself, which the listener is hearing at the moment the charge is quoted, and that fits the track's wider method of letting the bully's own words do the damage. Whether a performance counts as a refutation is a question the song raises and does not press.
The device converts the song from complaint into evidence. Cruelty is the theme, and what is offered against it is not argument but survival with an audience.

Angela pairs Shake It Off with Mean as two songs tackling the same subject, criticism from others, at different stages of Taylor's maturity. Mean, written when Taylor was about eighteen, has the speaker hurt and plaintive ('All you are is mean'), while Shake It Off, written around age twenty-two or twenty-three, shows the speaker having accepted criticism as part of life and choosing to laugh it off and keep moving. Angela frames this as significant growth across two albums.
