“And I know all the steps up to your door”
The door as a route the speaker has memorised. Knowing every step up to it, she keeps the threshold ready for a return she goes on choosing to wait for.
“Just know I'm right here hoping that you'll come in with the rain”
Rain is the cover under which a return might finally happen. The speaker holds the door for a lover she imagines arriving with the storm, the weather offering him a way back that he never takes.
“I'll leave my window open 'Cause I'm too tired at night to call your name”
An open window is what waiting looks like when the speaker has run out of ways to ask. The route back stays available and nobody has to say anything, which is both the generosity and the exhaustion of it.
“I could stand up and sing you a song”
The speaker says she could stand up and sing him a song, then declines, because she does not want to go that far. She is singing it as she says so. Refusing the grand gesture inside the gesture gives the line a wry edge, and it suits a song built on holding a door open without walking through it. The contradiction is not hidden. It is what makes the restraint audible.
The refusal to perform a grand gesture is itself performed, which suits a song about waiting without pressing. Restraint and desire occupy the same line.
