Shake and bake
Encoded in the album’s liner notes.
“I hope your life leads you back to my door”
The door as the hoped-for destination of a return. The speaker imagines the addressee's whole life eventually rerouting to her threshold, holding the door open as the fixed point she keeps for him while he travels.
“I'm taking pictures in my mind so I can save them for a rainy day”
Rain names the bad day held in reserve. The speaker banks her mental snapshots against a future low, borrowing the idiom of the rainy day as the season of need rather than literal weather.
“If you and I are a story that never gets told”
The potential romance held as a story that may never be narrated at all. Before the relationship has happened, the speaker already names it in terms of record: whether it will be a story someone tells or a story swallowed by silence. The question of whether it gets told sits earlier here than anywhere else in the catalogue, at the stage when the love is still only possible.
“He smiles, it's like the radio”
The boy's smile is set beside the warmth of a song on the radio, an early instance of the beloved's smile as the thing that pulls the speaker in.
“He whispers songs into my window”
Cory's voice arrives through the window as song rather than speech. The pane is the opening it comes through, which keeps him outside the house and audible inside it.
