“I think you should come live with me”

Uncle Jerry compares the child narrator's offer to rescue her friend from a troubled home to the scene in Forrest Gump where Jenny gets to go live with her grandmother, escaping her abusive father. Both feature a child's simple solution to domestic suffering: just come live somewhere safe. The comparison illuminates the song's treatment of childhood compassion as pure and uncomplicated. Community readings sharpen the comparison by naming the line. Jenny's prayer in the field - "Dear God, make me a bird, so I could fly far, far away from here" - is offered in the same register as the rescue in the bridge here, and by a child of roughly the same age.
