Connection to Taylor Swift

A reference point for Taylor’s confessional mode, and a sustained critical pairing. Plath is one of the foremost confessional poets, and Taylor’s diaristic, intensely personal lyric writing participates in that tradition; her poem “Daddy” is cited as context. The author Maggie Nelson built a book-length essay, The Slicks (2025), around the two as a joint study, prompted by the Plath resonances she heard in The Tortured Poets Department, and argues that both women were punished for naming their own ambition. Nelson reads Swift as a poet as well as a lyricist.
